macbook update banishes “moo”

August 18, 2006

Apple today quietly released an SMC firmware update for its line of MacBook mobile computers that “adjusts fan behavior”, namely the fan that often causes the acutely annoying “mooing” sound that has been the bane of many MacBook owners since the product’s release in late May (though the most recent revision is moo-free right out of the box). The issue, by all accounts, is now resolved, and the update has the side effect of decreasing the MacBook’s operating temperatures by 15-20C, according to comments over at TUAW–not an insubstantial amount. Props to Apple for finally taking care of this, but why did it take so long?
