dell recalls 4.1m batteries

August 15, 2006

Round Rock, Texas, based computer manufacturer Dell Inc. today announced that it is recalling 4.1m batteries made by Sony Corp. and sold with a variety of Latitude, Inspiron, Precision, and XPS notebook computers from April 2004 to July 18, 2006. The recall appears to be the result of a number of reports of explosions–Dell is reporting six separate instances–caused by the faulty power cells; an incident was first reported by The Inquirer on July 28, prompting an investigation by the company.

A poster on the Tom’s Hardware forums, “Henrik”, then posted pictures of another observed explosion. The Sydney Morning Herald next reported a Singapore man’s account of smoke and flames rising from his own Dell laptop. And those are just the well-publicized ones. Head on over to Dell’s recall page to check your battery serial numbers against those found to be defective, and don’t let your laptop turn into a flaming hunk of plastic like the one above. Readers, you have been warned.
