apple “iPhone” buzz building

Apple CFO Robert Oppenheimer’s stated during the company’s July 20 discussion of its Q3 earnings that “as regards cell phones, we don’t think that the phones that are available today make the best music players. We think the iPod is. But over time, that is likely to change. And we’re not sitting around doing nothing.” The comment set off a firestorm of speculation about when such a product, an “iPhone” if you will, would be released.

Engadget has the scoop on a few recent developments of note, including a report of an Apple marketing photo shoot for “the sleekest, sexiest damn phone [the photographer]’s ever seen” and discussion of several vaguely phone-related commands found in the latest iPod firmware update. As I’ve mentioned in my Core 2 Duo news postings, Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference is just around the corner, and you never know what CEO Steve Jobs will announce. I’ll be watching with rapt enthusiasm.
