July 27, 2006

Intel today launched its new processor architecture under the moniker “Core 2”, replacing the previous Pentium D offerings in its product lineup. The new flagship Core 2 Extreme processor is available starting today, and lower end models will ship beginning in early August.  While the mobile version, codenamed Merom, also launched today, notebooks containing the new chips will not be available until late August. Among the manufacturers to introduce new Core 2 desktops today are Alienware, Gateway, HP, and Samsung. In related news, Apple Computer is widely expected to launch a Core 2 version of its MacBook Pro mobile computer at next month’s World Wide Developers Conference beginning on August 7th. Updates on the Merom rollout will follow swiftly, so watch this spot.
