mobile core 2 duo shipping

Intel’s Q2 ’06 financial report (pdf) reveals that the mobile version of their new Core 2 Duo architecture, codenamed Merom, is now shipping to vendors. This comes as a surprise, given that availability of these chips is not expected until late August, and is a welcome surprise for me as it increases the likelihood that Apple Computer will update its MacBook Pro line with Core 2 at its World Wide Developers’ Conference (WWDC) beginning on August 7th. (I’ll be purchasing one for courses this fall.) Core 2 is a complete redesign of the current Core architecture, adding 64-bit capabilities and additional L2 cache while increasing overall efficiency and reducing power requirements and heat output. Performance should be very impressive, and you can check out Mac fans’ reactions over at MacRumors.
