conservatives protest at Times building
July 13, 2006
Poking around the blogosphere this evening, I ran across this post on syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin’s blog featuring photos of 100 or so protesters outside the New York Times building on Tuesday, reportedly chanting “all the treason that’s fit to print!” and “we’re not afraid of the power of the New York Times!” I can’t stand it. As I’ve discussed here, the Times recently disclosed the existence of a classified program granting government agencies access to financial records both at home and abroad in an effort to combat terrorism. I have made it clear that I stand with the Times on this, and seeing these photos and attitudes of those involved in the events depicted saddens me deeply. Reasoned discussion, not vitriolic shouting, is needed in considering the ideological conflicts and factual realities at issue here. Executive Editor Bill Keller has stated and defended the paper’s position in an unambiguous and diplomatic fashion, and those who would disagree owe him and the Times the same courtesy.
